What is the deal with MLB blackouts? Why can DirecTV block ESPN to force me...

...to buy MLB extra innings from them I live in Mississippi and it said out of area the other night during the Red Sox/Braves game. I actually bought the sports pack for a month but they blacked out NESN who carries all SOX games. I won't spend the money for extra innings and it would probably be blacked out anyway. It's sad when you can't support your team. If I had cable they wouldn't be able to block ESPN for a game.

The blackouts are due to MLB policy. DirecTV has no say in that policy. The local games are even blacked out in the MLB extra innings package because their rights go to whatever local channel has bought them.
