Without going into much detail, DirecTV never enabled the USB ports on their DVRs. Most subscribers don't believe they ever will, due to digital piracy concerns. So, for all intents and purposes, the USB ports on DirecTV DVRs have no use.Having said that, some people have figured out how to hack certain (but not all) DirecTV DVRs. These hacks permit you to connect your DVR to your home network, via the USB port and a USB Ethernet adapter. Once connected to a home network, it may be possible to: (1) watch recorded programs on any computer connected to the network, (2) watch a program recorded on one DVR on a TV connected to a different networked DVR, (3) program your DVR from any Web browser, and (4) burn backup copies of recorded shows to DVD. These hacks void your DirecTV warranty, and may involve other legal issues as well.
