DTV box matters?

All,
I'm a noobie and I'm wondering about my DTV box. It's basically the same one that I've had since I bought my place (at least 6 years old). It's a good box I think. It's an Sony. The sound is good and the picture seems good. I don't really have anything to compare it to though. I don't have an HD TV but a Trinitron that looks pretty good. The problem is that there are slight clips in the audio. You hear it more with phones on. I'm wondering if the box does make a difference here. The condo building I live in has a package deal so I don't know much about the satellite system, etc. If anyone has any info, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance,
Pierre
