new guy W/questions

so a brief history. Had direct tv for 6 years, got family on it as well and just got elderly father to switch 4 months ago.
I set it up for him because at 81 he is hard of hearing. So i set it up the guys said get this and that since its an intro offer and you can down grade later.

Fast forward father does not want HD/DVR receiver just wants the basic receiver
They are telling me he has to pay $69.00 for basic receiver+$20.00 shipping+ $50.00 for switching without enough credit history on account.
That comes to the same as keeping HD/DVR for 8+ months????

Question 1. Can I just buy a receiver from someone and have it turned on and save father $150.00?
Question 2. I am being told the "FREE HD/DVR" receiver must be sent back, when asked if its free why can't I keep it, i was told its free but not a gift. So is this true?
Question 3. I have old DTV receivers with old cards will they work?

Any help will be appreciated, My father is fed up and wants to pay the early term fee but I dont think he should

If father is a new customer then there is a 24 month contract unless otherwise stated. New customers whether cable/phone/satellite may need a deposit. That's just the way it works and deposit will be refunded at some point. Nothing is FREE. Semantics is what is going on in that part. Some old receivers will work with no issues if you have a compatible dish. None of the older dishes (that I know of) have HD. Mine is real old. So I updated dish recently. Can you own your own equipment. Absolutely. You can buy the dish. You can buy the receiver. If buying a receiver make absolutely sure that you actually own the receiver and the only ones that can tell you that are Direct TV customer service.
