Well, doesn't the contract lock you into using their service for a certain amount of months, or pay a early termination fee?

I believe it is yours to keep, but of course, you'll still have to pay to receive the signal to watch Dish TV. It just means that you won't get charged for renting the DVR.

check with the retailor you are getting it from! If it is a lease upgrade, it should only be $50.00 with a $50.00 credit to your bill. Also make sure it is a mpeg 4 reciever (211,222,622) or you will only receive about 10 HD channels, not 30.

Usually yes.I have Direct TV and I have bought a TiVo, and a couple to cable boxes through them. When I tried to see if I could sell something back to them they told me that I bought the equipment and had no interest in buying it back, ever.With a TiVo older than 6 months it is not worth half the price you paid for it, so it is more likely they don't want that TiVo back.The way to find out for sure is to look at an old bill and see if you are being charged a equipment fee. This was an old ploy by the cable companies that made their customers rent the cable box. Now days though you can buy a cable box so you don't have to put up with that. Since this is the newest trend I really think you will buy the HD DVR and it is forever yours to have and to hold, from this day forward.....I upgraded to my TiVo and I only had to pay $200. I was a long time customer, but I got a break for a promise to keep my subscription up for at least one year. I also have to pay the service fee to use the TiVo, which is about half the fee charged for a stand alone model. Without that service fee you will never get your TiVo updated, or a current TV listing, or access to new TV Channels. TiVo makes most of its money on those service fees. So paying $200 for an HD DVR is a good price, and a price you pay to buy it.
