Help again :(

Had the satellite man over today. He said I may have a faulty box (Fortec
Star Beta)
I can get hotbird and astra 1, no problem. Cannot get turksat or arabsat he
said I couldnt in the UK. BUT and here is the thing. I store the satellites
and can flick from one to another OK, but when I search for another
satellite and go back to hotbird or astra which are stored, it wont find
them and says no signal, like the dish isnt moving.

Are there any easier boxes to use, Oh and by the way, the dish is up near
the guttering of the house, when the dish moves it has free range one way
not not the other as it pushes against the guttering. I pointed this out
twice and he said its not a problem. Its having a good swing dont get me
wrong but if I go west to far it hits the guttering and wont go further.

HELP ! Please

Get another installer. Your bloke is an idiot.

Mounts have stops to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

I'm very sorry to have to say that there are very few satellite
installers who are much better then the average sky cowboy. Sometimes
you can make a better job if these things by yourself rather then to
trust the professionals .. as there are very few who are professional.

Especially once they are faced with anything other then a Sky dish;(....

I did advise you to get a fixed dish like the Wave Frontier for this
very reason.

Have you set the end limits? You MUST do this first to stop the dish
hitting the wall/gutter.

Hi Pat!

Just got back and shortly out agin for a little while,
so, for the moment, some quick thoughts to add to those
of others...

First, you are not alone - daresay just about everyone
here has had exactly the same experiences, give or take
a few! It's a learning curve that never ceases...

Your sat motor is obviously working - and the dish is
(occasionally) getting somewhere if you have been able
to pick Hotbird at 13E and Astra at 28.2/28.5E.

Not sure - what is your new box ..the replacement?
The make (or the name on the front) and the model?
Does it have USALS onboard?

It might help if we can google for the manual, or for
the User Instructions, if they're available. Someone
might be using the same or similar box - and can step
in to help..

Your dish installer probably didn't understand your
box, or he/she would have left you with the end limits
set - as Jomtien and Tony have said..

Setting these limits should be somewhere in your box
menu. They might come under an 'installer' option and
setting these east/west end limits should stop the
box from turning the sat motor into the guttering.

However, limits aside, there's a couple of things that
you can try immediately ..in a way you might already
have done these..

If you have been getting the Hotbird group at 13E,
choose a channel on Hotbird so that the dish moves to
that position. (Don't worry about what you are not
getting - just moving the dish into position so it
doesn't flail aimlessly about).

Then...

Switch your box into standby - ie no power is being
delivered to your sat motor. Allow the box to cool
it's heels for a few minutes ..perhaps ten or so.

Wake your box up again.. come out of standby. Are you
now picking up any channels..? If not, what is the
message you are getting...?

Second attempt, if you are still getting nothing.

Switch your box off altogether at the mains - and take
the plug out - or disconnect the mains lead from the
box, if that's easier.

Again ..leave the box off for a few minutes ..perhaps
ten or so (may be a bit longer with some boxes). The
reason for this slight 'wait' is that not all boxes
power-down immediately.. sometimes there's a residual
'glow' that keeps a faulted program alive for a minute
or two - can be almost for ever if the mains plug
remains connected, even when 'off'!

Then, after a few minutes, carefully re-connect the
lead to the box and then the plug ..and switch on.

Your box should now go into a boot-up sequence and
re-install it's internal software. Doesn't normally
lose anything you've put in - although sometimes that
can be a major advantage ;'))

What do you now get? Are you now receiving channels
from the Hotbird group? If not, what is the exact
error message, if anything..?

Other things that (for the moment) you might find
also find helpful:

Keep a note book by your side so that you can write
down what happens - or any error messages that arrive.

...and, if possible, keep or print out all the messages
that have arrived, both here and in your other "500.00gbp"
thread.

It's often very useful to be able to refer to things
that have been said by contributors earlier - even if
they didn't seem to make much sense to you at the time.

...and relax (if possible)! You'll get there.. )

Best wishes, back soon...

Bill ZFC
