PI have been popular since the late eighteen hundreds and have the stereotype of being suspicious figures who use questionable methods to discover information. However, most PI are licensed detectives and abide by all of the laws of the state and country. Some are self-employed, but the majority of PI's work for an agency. PI's are hired to find and analyze information by many different entities including legal organizations, private corporations, government agencies, and individuals.One type of organization that frequently hires PI's is insurance companies. Many insurance companies receive claims that are suspicious, and so they send a private investigator to see if the claim is legitimate.
Some of the most popular types of cases that PI's are hired for is the finding of information related to child custody, spouse infidelity, and alimony. These types of cases are almost always initiated by individuals, and private investigators are hired to discover if a spouse or ex-spouse is having an affair or following all of the legal requirements outlined in child custody laws.
